Southside, a classic cocktail perfect for summer

Like most cocktails, the origin story of The Southside is debated.  One of the origin stories for this drink is that it was a prohibition era cocktail developed by the gangsters on the southside of Chicago who were trying to make their bootleg gin more palatable.  Since I live in Chicago, and we all know the history of gangsters, bootlegging and the popularity of the southside of the city in the 1920’s and 30 (the time this drink became known), I’m going with that version.

This drink became an instant classic in my house.  First, anything with mint is a favorite around here.  Second, the ingredient list is simple, without any special liqueurs or mixers, which makes it an easy everyday cocktail.  Finally, we love a good mojito, and this cocktail carries the unmistakable flavor profile of the classic mojito, except made with gin.  Use a straightforward London dry gin for this drink.  There are some great craft gins, but when making The Southside, you want that classic London dry gin with juniper and citrus to round out the flavors.

This drink is shaken, served up in a cocktail or martini glass, which is another distinction to it’s Mojito cousin.  You aren’t adding soda water or any other soda mixers, so its a more concentrated flavor of mint and gin.  I think it’s a cleaner, more refined experience compared to a Mojito.  Perfect for before or after dinner during the dog-days of summer.  If you have never tried a Southside, give this a shot – it’s a delicious classic.  Cheers!
