Lime Drop, a New Classic
The first cocktail I made after I successfully produced my own limecello was a version of the Lemon Drop, made with limecello and lime, I call it a Lime Drop. It was as good as it sounds. You can find my blog and recipe for a Lemon Drop here. The beauty of keeping limoncello and limecello in the house is that I can make a great and flavorful cocktail that achieves a big punch of flavor and does not get watered down or have any artificial flavors.
You will find Lemon Drop cocktails on most bar menus, often on the martini menu, much to the dismay of traditionalists who bristle at the current convention of classifying basically any and every drink served ‘up’ as a martini. I have never come across a Lime Drop on a bar menu. I am not entirely sure why that is. It is certainly true that limoncello is omnipresent and limecello is almost nonexistent in bars, but with all the flavored vodkas these days, you would think a lime first cocktail would be more common. It may have something to do with the quality of the flavor of these lime-flavored vodkas. The lemon-flavored vodkas seem a closer match to the true qualities of a lemon. The lime-flavored vodkas, not so much – in my opinion.
Whatever the reason, not to worry. You can make this delicious and refreshing cocktail at home with three ingredients. You will need to get your hands on some limecello. Making your own is easy. You can find my blog and recipe here. Using fresh squeezed lime juice and vodka (plain, regular, no added flavor vodka), you will have a great and refreshing cocktail that you can make at home. If a lemon drop tastes like summer sunshine, then a lime drop tastes like a summer sunset. This is a new classic; I hope you give it a try! Cheers!
